Withhold Member Pay During Shutdowns Act

Introducedeconomy

Progress

Timeline

  • Mar 18Ordered to be Reported in the Nature of a Substitute (Amended) by the Yeas and Nays: 10 - 0.

Summary

**What it does:** This bill would stop paying members of Congress during government shutdowns. **Who it affects:** All Representatives and Senators in the U.S. Congress who would normally receive their congressional salaries during shutdown periods. **What would change:** Currently, when the federal government shuts down due to budget disagreements, most federal employees don't get paid, but Congress members continue receiving their regular paychecks. If this bill becomes law, Congress members would also have their pay withheld during any government shutdown period, just like other federal workers. They would presumably receive their back pay once the government reopens and normal operations resume. This bill has only been introduced and would need to pass both chambers of Congress and be signed by the President to become law.
